Inca Trail Closed due to flooding

After terrible heavy rains and flooding at Machu Picchu it was thought that operations would reopen sooner than initially expected. The Train, a popular alternative method for visiting the ancient Inca city, was also closed for February so that it could under go its annual maintenance and repairs. Now comes word that the train will not re-open in March as hoped, but will remain closed for that month as well. According to some of the trekking companies, the Instituto Nacional de Cultura, the governing body that oversees the Inca Trail, has announced that no treks will be allowed to take to the Inca Trail until the end of March. Furthermore, the INC is already issuing refunds to those that had purchased permits to hike the trail, and is encouraging visitors to seek alternative options for their Peruvian adventures. With Machu Picchu remaining largely inaccessible at the moment, and the trail closed off as well, the Peruvian economy, which relies on tourism as a major source of income, has taken a bit of a hit. But, an alternate route to the mountaintop fortress is expected to open next week, with regular train service resuming in early March. By April, everything should be back to normal, although travelers expecting to get the full Peru experience will be out of luck for the next few weeks.

Inca Trail Trek

Inca Trail Trek
In October 2009 I was part of a group of 20 Irish people who went to do the Inca Trail Trek in Peru. We had raised a combined total of €100,000 for an Irish charity. As well as the challenge of fundraising, there was the personal challenge involved in doing the 4 day Inca Trail trek.
Before we managed to touch down in Peru we had some unexpected delays which cost us a full day of travelling. As a result we had one less day to acclimatise in Cusco.
Altitude Sickness. Within a couple of hours of arriving in Cusco everybody could feel the symptoms of altitude sickness. For me they were quite mild and I actually enjoyed them. I was very light headed and when I walked it felt like the ground was moving slightly up and down. It's like being a little bit stoned without the paranoia, its good fun. It's definitely nothing to worry about. Make sure you drink the cocoa tea whenever you get the chance, it keeps the symptoms at a minimum, keeps the headaches away. It's not the nicest tea I've ever had but it's not the worst either.
It's recommended that you spend at least 2 days acclimatising before you set off on your trek.
There are different options available as far as the trek you choose to go on, all of which end up at the breath taking and spiritual Machu Picchu. Before I talk about my personal experience of the trek, you should have a listen to this interview I have with one of the top guides. He has brought hundreds of people on the various treks and knows all there is to know. So have a listen to the interview and we can discuss the options afterwards. Enjoy.
